Dolphin & Bonito

MAHI MAHI MAHI

You don’t have to go to Florida to catch dolphin or mahi…..  Once offshore waters warm in July, dolphin (mahi), and bonito will oblige.  Whether on the troll, in the chum, or on the fly, under either a patch of Gulf Weed or a lobster trawl highflyer, these gamesters can add to an already exciting day offshore for tuna.  Many days the last few years found us scoring with BOTH mahi AND yellowfin off the flyers. Areas north of the steamer lane produced super tuna and dolphin action, with mahi pushing into Block Is. waters in Sept.  Look for feature stories in The FISHERMAN, N.E. Edit., about last years “super” action.

Dolphin (mahi mahi) are frequently common from Aug.-Oct., typically taken trolling, chumming or fly casting.

BONITO BONITO BONITO
Atlantic bonito, false albacore (Little Tunny) and skipjack tuna offered fantastic action, either on ultra-light or fly tackle, both trolling and chumming, offshore as well as inshore, from late August thru mid-October. These speedsters offer a great opportunity for fly rod addicts to prepare/practice for their larger cousins (tuna).
